Action for Sustainable Development (ASUD) in Malawi is pleased to share the impact of the support received from Kitchen Table Charities Trust (KTCT) rendered at Mtende Primary School located in the most remote and hard to reach area in Mzimba district. Since the school was established in 2004 until 2017, it had bad toilets that were grass roofed and leaked, they had no doors, had mud floor and they were always wet during rainy season. This highly contributed towards education failure as majority of pupils were not attracted to stay in school.

This induced absenteeism, poor performance and increased school drop-out rates more especially girls. In reversing the problem, KTCT is a top player that funded the construction of many VIP latrines at the school through ASUD and the project was fully completed in 2017. Since that time, attendance in school tremendously increased and the school passing percentage immediately increased. The records at the school show that none of the pupils passed the Standard 8 National Examinations between 2010 and 2016. After project completion, in 2017, 63% of the pupils passed and in 2018 the passing rate rose to 81%, enrollment has tremendously increased, absenteeism and drop-outs has gone down. In addition to that, the outlook of the school is fully transformed and it is very attractive for pupils. Virginia Soko aged 13 years old is one the learners that are selected into a secondary school from Mtende. She says ‘’I thank ASUD and KTCT for supporting my school. I can see light in my future and I want to become a model in my community. Let me also thank Friends of Malawi Association (FOMA) UK that gave us desks, Global Giving UK and Christ Church of Bedford that jointly gave us one toilet building of two rooms’’. At present, Mtende community keeps over 95% of its population that never stepped into any secondary school. “We are sure; Mtende will increase number of educated people”.  Wilson Mtuwa Mtende Deputy Head teacher confirms.
